I’m a Holistic Nutritionist and I’m so passionate about all things related to health.  And I’m not just talking about food and calories. Because I believe that the body is more than just the physical, and to create healing we need to look at the body as a whole: all the emotional stuff, physical symptoms, mentally and even spiritually.

My Thoughts on Calories

But how many calories is this? To be honest, that word isn't even in my vocabulary. Yes, I work with food and make healthy recommendations everyday, but I don't base my practice on calories and counting them. I believe that our bodies are intelligent, and know what we need for optimal health. Every feeling, every symptom, and every emotion we experience is a cue from our bodies to tell us if something is working for us, or if something is not so good. Hunger is one of those cues. When we're hungry, our body is telling us that it needs certain nutrients in order to feel satiated. When we eat the right foods that our bodies need, we feel satisfied, we have stable energy and are emotionally

What's Nutrition got to do with PMS?

When it's that time of the month and you just want to run for the hills because gaaaahhh! Right? But it's just a time for the body to shed the things it doesn't need and start fresh again. Does it need to be so painful though? The reality is, it doesn't actually have to be. For me, I recognize that pain is a signal to pay attention. What have I been feeding my body that might be causing these symptoms? Moodiness, frustration with everrryyythiiinng around me, crampiness, low energy, headaches. These are common PMS stuff, right? But are they normal? These symptoms are typical for a body that is experiencing inflammation, but it doesn't need to be like that. What types of things are inflamm

My Vegan Caesar

Yesterday I learned that most of the world's population is calling nutritional yeast "nootch". And finding that out, made me feel a) like a grandma and b) made me want to make everything with nutritional yeast yesterday! Here's my "no measurements" because "aint nobody got time" vegan caesar recipe: Lemon juice Olive oil "NOOTCH" Sesame tahini Crushed garlic Cashew cheese(or soaked cashews if you have) Sea salt Cracked black pepper Turmeric Blend in a blender and drizzle over your favourite leafy greens!

Marjan's Kitchen Essentials

Here’s what I always always have in my cupboards, and here’s why: Oils used in packaged foods or restaurant foods are often rancid and cause all sorts of problems with our health. Get yourself a good salad oil(flax, hemp, or olive oil) and something for cooking too. I go for avocado oil because it has the highest heat tolerance. Stock your cupboards with natural sugars: REAL maple syrup, honey, stevia, real vanilla extract, or monk fruit. The body literally doesn't recognize artificial sugars and stores it away as fat, and white sugar turns into fat too, but also has a major affect on blood sugar levels going up and down and leading to diabetes. Switch out your table salt for REAL SEA SALT.

To Snack or Not to Snack?

There's so much info out there that says take this pill for weight loss, or eat this food to be healthy, and even "you need to eat more frequently throughout the day to keep your metabolism going". For me, I try to adopt a "less is more" attitude. Every time we eat food, insulin gets released in our bodies to help drive sugar into our cells to give us energy. That's exactly what we want! But what happens when insulin gets released too many times throughout the day? Well, eventually, those cells are going to say "no more" and become resistant to that signal (also known as insulin resistance). And when our cells are having a tough time with taking in all that sugar, it eventually gets stored
